university of calgary
We’ve been knocking on doors and collecting survey feedback for over six months in University of Calgary and across Ward 7, and we learned a lot about residents’ priorities.
What we heard
Housing affordability was by far the most common concern raised. Students stressed that the lack of affordable options makes it difficult to live and study comfortably.
“Students need housing they can actually afford.”

Transit and mobility were also top issues. Many called for more reliable service, particularly in the evenings, along with stronger cycling and pedestrian connections both on campus and to nearby communities.
“Transit at night could be more reliable.”

“Walking and biking around campus should feel safe.”

“Student-friendly shops and services would make life easier.”

“Living on campus is convenient, but I wish we had a grocery store.”

Beyond day-to-day needs, residents highlighted the importance of green space, gathering places, and recreation opportunities. They called for more shaded areas, accessible study spots, and affordable fitness and leisure options.
Other concerns included parking pressures spilling onto nearby streets and the need for sustainable campus growth that prioritizes students and maintains a welcoming environment.
Students also voiced interest in more retail and services designed with them in mind, from affordable groceries to convenient cafés and shops.
