We’ve been knocking on doors and collecting survey feedback for over six months in Sunnyside and across Ward 7, and we learned a lot about residents’ priorities.

What we heard

Residents consistently highlighted Sunnyside’s walkability and strong connection to downtown as what makes the community special.

“Being able to walk everywhere is the best part of living here.”

— Sunnyside Resident

At the same time, flood resilience remains top of mind. Residents know that protecting homes and infrastructure is critical for the neighbourhood’s future.

“Flood protection is a must for our community.”

“Crossing 10th Street should be safer for pedestrians.”

Traffic and pedestrian safety were also major themes. People pointed to challenges crossing 10th Street and Kensington Road and asked for safer conditions.

“The construction on 2nd Avenue has been challenging but I think it will be worth it when they’re done.”

— Sunnyside Resident

Construction disruptions were raised as frustrations. But many expressed optimism about the long-term improvements being made.

“Affordable housing will help to keep our neighbours here long-term.”

— Sunnyside Resident

Other priorities included reducing noise and traffic impacts, creating cleaner and safer public spaces, and supporting small-scale retail, cafés, and more community events.

Looking forward, residents want to see more trees, shaded spaces, and improved sidewalks to make Sunnyside even more walkable.

There was also strong support for affordable housing.
