Your neighbourhood listening tour report

downtown west end

We’ve been knocking on doors and collecting survey feedback for over six months in Downtown West End and across Ward 7, and we learned a lot about residents’ priorities.

What we heard

Residents consistently highlight the river pathways as the neighbourhood’s greatest strength. The ability to walk, run, or cycle along the Bow River is one of the most loved aspects of living here.

“The river pathways are what I love most about this area.”

— Downtown West End Resident

Safety is a concern. People told us they want to feel secure walking at night, with better lighting and maintenance along key routes.

“Walking at night should feel safer.”

Noise is another common theme. Traffic from Memorial Drive and Bow Trail creates a constant backdrop that affects daily life.

“Bow Trail traffic creates a lot of noise.”

— Downtown West End Resident

Residents want to see more greenery in dense areas. Calls for planting more trees, adding landscaping, and ensuring public seating along the river reflect the desire to make West End feel more like a lived-in community.

“Adding more trees would make the community feel more welcoming and like an actual neighbourhood.”

— Downtown West End Resident

There is also strong interest in more local businesses and shops that provide daily convenience, as well as cultural programming and community events to bring people together.

“it feels like we could use more small shops and cafés.”

— Downtown West End Resident

Concerns about the pace and impacts of high-rise construction round out the picture, along with a desire for stronger connections to the rest of downtown.
