Druh Farrell’s Endorsement

Over two decades, Druh Farrell was a principled and values-driven representative who helped shape Ward 7 into one of Calgary’s most vibrant, walkable, and people-centred areas in the city.

Every day I went into work at the Library, I saw the legacy of that leadership firsthand: riding the cycle tracks, crossing the Peace Bridge, walking into the new Central Library. It’s a daily reminder of what thoughtful, creative city-building can achieve, and I feel so fortunate that I get to live in those results every day.

That’s why it’s such an honour to receive this endorsement from Druh. I look forward to carrying her legacy forward and to bringing strong, independent leadership back to Ward 7.

October 2025

Over the course of my 20 years serving as City Councillor I gained a strong appreciation for the distinct needs of the residents and neighbourhoods in Ward 7. Ward 7 is the heart of Calgary, home to the economic hub of the city, many of our cultural institutions, centres for higher learning, the Confluence of our two rivers, and of course, many great and unique neighbourhoods. Ward 7 is also home to some challenging urban issues that require local wisdom and response.

Like many other Calgarians, I am concerned with the Province’s introduction of political parties to municipal politics.  This change was forced upon us with no consultation, not to strengthen civic governance, but to exert Provincial control over local decision-making. The next step could be to introduce a party whip or to follow Ontario’s example by implementing a “Strong Mayor” system, giving the mayor veto power over city council. Calgary needs local, independent representation, and the introduction of partisan politics at City Hall poses a real threat to our city’s democracy.

That’s why I am excited to support Myke Atkinson, a local, independent candidate in this election. I have been impressed by Myke’s energy and breadth of community experience, but most importantly, his ability to listen, reflect, and communicate effectively. In today’s world more than ever, these skills will be critical in advocating for our neighbourhoods at City Hall.

I invite you to join me in supporting Myke Atkinson on October 20th.
