Your neighbourhood listening tour report
downtown east village
We’ve been knocking on doors and collecting survey feedback for over six months in Downtown East Village and across Ward 7, and we learned a lot about residents’ priorities.
What we heard
Residents consistently highlight pride in the transformation of East Village. New parks, public spaces, and amenities are seen as a turning point for the neighbourhood’s future.
“The parks around East Village are my favourite part.”
— Downtown East Village Resident
Safety remains a concern. Residents want a neighbourhood that feels welcoming at all hours, while also ensuring vulnerable neighbours are treated with dignity.
“Public safety is always on people’s minds here, but the homeless people are also our neighbours and deserve to be treated properly.”
— Downtown East Village Resident
Housing affordability is another recurring theme. Residents emphasized the importance of ensuring East Village remains inclusive and accessible for people of all incomes.
“We need housing that people can actually afford.”
— Downtown East Village Resident
The riverfront is a point of pride and a key asset. People want to see it fully accessible and celebrated as part of East Village’s identity.
“The riverfront is beautiful and should be open to everyone.”
— Downtown East Village Resident
Residents called for more daily amenities like grocery stores, childcare, and local services to make living in East Village easier. Cultural events, community markets, and festivals were also highlighted as essential to creating vibrancy and connection.
“Community markets and events are one of the best part of living here.”
— Downtown East Village Resident
Other priorities include safer pedestrian crossings at major intersections, more shade trees and landscaping to balance density, and even interest in expanding post-secondary offerings nearby. Concerns about late-night noise from activities also came up.
