Your neighbourhood listening tour report

chinatown

We’ve been knocking on doors and collecting survey feedback for over six months in Chinatown and across Ward 7, and we learned a lot about residents’ priorities.

What we heard

Residents consistently express pride in Chinatown as the cultural heart of Calgary. It is seen as a place that anchors identity, history, and community spirit.

“This neighbourhood is a unique part of Calgary that we need to celebrate more.”

— Chinatown Resident

Many are calling for stronger recognition and protection. Residents want Chinatown formally recognized as a historic district, with steps taken to preserve its heritage and character.

“I want Chinatown to be treated like a historic district, not just another block downtown.”

— Chinatown Resident

Public safety is a recurring concern, particularly at night. People pointed to sidewalk and lighting improvements as critical for ensuring the neighbourhood feels more welcoming. Construction is another recurring theme. Residents voiced frustration with long timelines, disruptions, and upkeep during building projects.

“The sidewalks and lighting could feel more welcoming”

— Chinatown Resident

There are also concerns about affordability. Both residents and small businesses worry about rising costs and the pressures of redevelopment. Many feel Chinatown is sometimes treated as only a destination for visitors, rather than as a lived-in community that people call home.

“For us, this isn’t just a festival spot, it’s home.”

— Chinatown Resident

Looking forward, residents want the City to step up with stronger support for cultural programming and day-to-day maintenance. Requests ranged from cleaner, better-maintained public spaces to new investments in cultural life. Microgrants to help local organizations offer free programming were seen as especially valuable.

“Our community deserves funding for more cultural programs”

— Chinatown Resident

There is strong interest in improving Chinatown’s connections — both to the Bow Riverfront and to Calgary’s downtown core — to keep the neighbourhood accessible and vibrant.
