Your neighbourhood listening tour report

capitol hill

We’ve been knocking on doors and collecting survey feedback for over six months in Capitol Hill and across Ward 7, and we learned a lot about residents’ priorities.

What we heard

Residents consistently highlight the neighbourhood’s central location and its convenience. Proximity to downtown, SAIT, and transit is highly valued.

“Living so close to downtown and transit makes life easier.”

— Capitol Hill Resident

At the same time, people deeply appreciate the character of their streets. The quiet, tree-lined streets and strong community spirit are part of what makes this area feel special.

“Our quiet streets are beautiful and I want to keep them that way.”

— Capitol Hill Resident

Concerns about change came through as well. Many worry about the scale and design of infill development and how it fits into the community’s fabric. Parking and traffic congestion from nearby institutions add to the pressure.

Construction is another recurring theme. Residents voiced frustration with long timelines, disruptions, and upkeep during building projects.

“Some of the construction drags on and it wears people out.”

— Capitol Hill Resident

There’s also strong appreciation for what already exists — the schools, the tree canopy, and the parks that knit the neighbourhood together.

“Confederation Park and the trees make this community special and we should add more.”

— Capitol Hill Resident

“We have amazing schools in this area.”

— Capitol Hill Resident

Residents are clear: they want growth and renewal, but in a way that protects what makes their community welcoming, connected, and livable.

Families also pointed to the need for better maintenance, particularly snow removal during the winter months, when construction can make navigation even harder.

Looking to the future, people want more vibrancy and connection. Calls for outdoor events in Confederation Park, improved pedestrian and cycling connections, and unique, walkable retail options were common.

a few favourite spots in the neighbourhood

confederation park

A sprawling green space at the community’s edge, Confederation Park is the go-to spot for walking, cycling, picnics, and year-round recreation. Families treasure it for its playgrounds and winter tobogganing hills.

Community hall

Capitol Hill’s social fabric is strengthened by its community gatherings. The monthly Pub Night at the Capitol Hill Community Association is a cherished tradition, while seasonal events and family-friendly programs keep neighbours connected and engaged.

Proximity to SAIT, U of C, and Downtown

The community’s central location makes daily life convenient — whether walking to transit, commuting downtown, or accessing nearby institutions like SAIT and the University of Calgary.

Every neighbourhood in Ward 7 has its own character, but together they share common hopes and challenges. From safe streets and thriving local businesses to parks, pathways, and gathering places, the themes are clear.
